Microsoft has unveiled “Xbox Indie Selects,” a new initiative aimed at highlighting indie games in the bustling gaming market. This program is reminiscent of the Xbox 360’s celebrated Xbox Live Arcade and seeks to offer a platform for indie titles to shine.
How Xbox Indie Selects Operates
- Monthly Curated Collection: Every month, six indie games will be handpicked by the ID@Xbox team as that month’s ID@Xbox Indie Selects.
- Prominent Display: These games will feature prominently in the Xbox Indies section of the Xbox Store and dashboard, with additional indie collections being updated weekly on Wednesdays.
- Selection Criteria: The focus isn’t limited to ID@Xbox program games; any game that embodies the indie spirit can be featured. However, indie games already available on Game Pass will be excluded to prevent overlap, as they are already showcased in the Game Pass hub.
Objectives Behind the Launch
- Discoverability for Unique Titles: Microsoft aims to facilitate the discovery and accessibility of indie games, recognizing the challenges unique titles face in crowded marketplaces.
- Spotlight on Special Games: According to Glenn Gregory, ID@Xbox Marketing Manager, the curated collection on Xbox Store will bring more attention to games ranging from current favorites to hidden gems and new creations from global developers.
A Nostalgic Connection: Xbox Live Arcade
- Legacy of Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA): A vital part of the Xbox 360’s download offerings, XBLA was known for featuring smaller, more affordable games that became some of the best in their generation, like ‘Fez,’ ‘Bastion,’ and ‘Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2.’
Microsoft’s Endeavor to Promote Indie Gaming
Xbox Indie Selects represents a significant stride by Microsoft in the indie gaming scene, providing a unique platform for indie developers to showcase their creations.
This initiative not only supports the indie gaming community but also offers gamers a chance to explore diverse and innovative titles. As the gaming landscape continues to evolve, such initiatives are crucial in ensuring that creative and distinctive games receive the recognition they deserve.
