Darren Jason Watkins Jr., better known as ‘Speed,’ arrived in Peru as part of his South American tour, and what followed was nothing short of a spectacle.
From his arrival at Jorge Chávez Airport to his journey through the streets of downtown Lima, the streamer sparked euphoria among thousands of fans, turning the city into a scene of collective hysteria. Here’s a recap of the most shocking moments from his second day in Peru.
A Turbulent Arrival
Speed landed in Lima on Monday night, but his arrival was anything but smooth. Wearing a hoodie to conceal his identity, the streamer was quickly recognized.
The situation escalated when fellow content creator Zekagames streamed his arrival live on Kick, angering Speed’s security team. Amid shoving and shouting, Speed managed to leave the airport, marking the beginning of his chaotic time in Lima.
Massive Crowds in the Historic Center and an Unexpected Honor
Speed’s journey through Lima began on Tacna Avenue and led him to the Plaza de Armas, where an ever-growing crowd gathered. Amid chants of “Peru is number one!” and gifts like King Kong sweets and Inca Kola, Speed became the center of attention.
Despite the chaotic welcome, he accepted an invitation from Mayor Rafael López Aliaga to serve as “honorary mayor for an hour” at the Municipal Palace.
From the balcony, Speed addressed the thousands of fans below, greeted the mayor with an enthusiastic “I’m with my friend Porky!” and even defied security by attempting a risky backflip from the railing—an act that sent the crowd into a frenzy.
Tasting Local Cuisine and Experiencing Peruvian Culture
The streamer also immersed himself in Peruvian gastronomy. During a food festival at the Plaza de Armas, he sampled dishes such as pollada, cuy, and pachamanca. However, the ceviche proved too spicy for him, leading to a dramatic plea for water. He also tried coca leaves and ruda while his fans cheered him on, chanting support for Cristiano Ronaldo and jeering at Messi.
Later, at the Municipal Theater, Speed watched a traditional scissors dance performance, visibly impressed by the dancers’ skill. Attempting to imitate the challenging act, he admitted, “Peru, whatever it is you do, I’m not made for this.”
Chaos in Gamarra and a Farewell at the National Stadium
Speed’s visit to Gamarra turned into a logistical challenge. Accompanied by ‘Zein,’ he toured the commercial hub, enjoying a salchipapa and a plate of potato with egg—a combination he loved. However, the swelling crowd caused tension, forcing him to leave quickly.
Finally, his last stop was the National Stadium, where he took photos with fans, juggled a soccer ball, and interacted with a Spider-Man impersonator. In his final moments live, Speed celebrated the impressive number of new Peruvian subscribers, making Peru one of his top audiences, second only to Indonesia. His last message: “Peru is number one!”
Will Speed Return to Peru?
Speed’s visit to Peru was a mix of excitement, chaos, and cultural immersion. His time in Lima was so intense that, despite visible exhaustion, he did not rule out returning in the future. After all, if there’s one thing the streamer loves, it’s the passion of his fans—and in Peru, he found it in abundance.
