More than 1,500 female employees of Riot Games have received financial compensation after filing a complaint against the developer for gender discrimination.

According to information Axios published, 1,548 have received financial compensation. This compensation was made after the women reported gender discrimination at work.

Riot Games has agreed to pay about $100 million to avoid pursuing a class action lawsuit for discrimination against women in the workplace.

Riot Games pays $100 million to more than 1,500 women who have complained of gender discrimination

The League of Legends developer has agreed to pay women who have reported gender discrimination. However, it is important to comment that not all reported women have received the same amount.

The first payments made by Riot Games ranged from $2,500 to $5,000, although some of these payments can be as high as $40,000 in some cases.

Riot Games’ goal in paying thousands of women a huge amount of money is to avoid a class action lawsuit for sex discrimination; apparently, Riot’s strategy has worked. However, it is important to note that of all the women who have complained, seven of them have not accepted the settlement with the developer.

Controversy over the “sexist culture” surrounding Riot Games

It is important to mention that although the agreement’s details are completely new, the fact that it exists is nothing new. We have been hearing since 2021 about the payment of a millionaire compensation by Riot Games.

A few months later, the news broke that more than 1,000 women could benefit from the agreement. But that’s not all; around that time, we also learned that the legal representatives of this large group of women thought it was a great day for all the women who were part of Riot Games. This was an important fact for all women in the video game and technology industry; with this agreement, they were taking a step towards work environments free of discrimination and harassment.

Riot Games Sexist Culture Class Action Lawsuit

The origin of the class action lawsuit came to public light in 2018, right around the time Kotaku published an article with the headline “Inside Riot Games’ sexist culture.” In that article, you could read many interviews with women Riot had rejected for some job positions in the hiring process.

Since the beginning of the Riot lawsuit, things have improved for women; since then, the video game developer has decided to change the company’s hiring policies. But that’s not all. Riot Games has also been more transparent with the salary issue, which was a reason for many complaints.
