The first Counter-Strike 2 Major, PGL Major Copenhagen 2024, kicked off its opening stage on March 17. Over four days filled with matches and eliminations, viewers from around the globe tuned in to witness the evolution of the global Counter-Strike competitive scene.

The event’s viewership has been steady thus far and is expected to increase for the elimination stage, where many of the favorites will debut.

No Direct Invitations

In this instance, no team was directly invited to the Major, as Valve preferred all teams to compete and qualify through RMR events with the competitive scene recently rebooted following the launch of CS2.

Out of the 24 teams that qualified through these regional events, 8 were directly invited to the elimination stage based on Valve’s regional rankings, rather than their results in the RMR events.

Audience Insights

Viewership for the opening stage was notable, according to Esports Charts data, registering over 15.48 million hours watched. However, this number represents a 14.5% decrease in viewing time compared to the previous Major, although the current PGL Major featured significantly fewer broadcast hours. In terms of average concurrent viewers,

The Copenhagen Major reached an average of 420.3 thousand viewers, marking an almost negligible 0.7% increase in viewership for this stage.

Language-Specific Audience Trends

English-language viewership for this stage has been much lower compared to previous events. In comparison to last year’s Paris Major, the PGL Major Copenhagen 2024 saw a 40.4% lower peak English-language audience, with only 244.7 thousand peak viewers.

This number reflects more on reduced interest in the opening stage from global audiences than a decline in English-language viewership, and an increase in English-language viewership is expected significantly as the elimination stage and playoffs progress.
